Gary WU obtained both his LLB and LLM in Maritime Law from Dalian Maritime University. He specializes in maritime law, insurance disputes and international disputes. With extensive experience in handling cases arising from bills of lading, charterparties and marine casualties, he is adept at managing disputes involving ship collisions and contact accidents, ship-source oil pollution, salvage, ship sale and repair, death and personal injury, marine insurance and recovery claims, as well as cross-border disputes and other commercial matters.
Gary WU has handled a number of cases arising from major or high-profile marine casualties occurring in waters off eastern China, including those involving YUAN TONG, CMA CGM FLORIDA c/w CHOUSHAN, NORTHERN JASPER c/w SAFMARINE MERU, ELLINGTON c/w EL ZORRO, and SEA JUSTICE c/w A SYMPHONY, among others.
Gary WU has extensive experience in handling litigation before most maritime courts in China, higher people’s courts and the Supreme People’s Court, as well as arbitration proceedings before international and domestic arbitration institutions.

Achievements
1. Acted for the P&I Club and owners of M/V “KOTA NEBULA” in handling the collision with F/V “ZHE PU YU 75158” off Zhoushan in 2012 and the subsequent criminal proceedings against the foreign crew members.
2. Acted for the P&I Club, owners and managers of M/V “YUAN TONG” in handling the claims and legal proceedings arising from the Vessel’s sinking at a shipyard in Zhoushan in 2012, which resulted in the deaths of seven persons, including personal death claims, a recovery claim against the shipyard, an administrative lawsuit against the local government and criminal proceedings.
3. Acted for the P&I Club and owners of M/V “CMA CGM FLORIDA” in handling various claims and the lengthy and high-profile legal proceedings arising from the Vessel’s collision with M/V “CHOU SHAN” in 2013, including, but not limited to, pollution claims, claims for fishery resource losses, cargo damage claims and claims for general average contributions.
4. Acted for the P&I Club and owners of M/V “XIUMEI TIANJIN” in handling the disputes arising from the Vessel’s serious collision with M/V “JIA LI HAI” off Zhoushan in 2013.
5. Acted for the P&I Club and charterers of M/V “NORTHERN GUARD” in pursuing a recovery action against the shipper and freight forwarders in connection with a fire that occurred on board the Vessel in 2014 due to the misdeclaration of containerised cargo.
6. Acted for the P&I Club and owners of M/V “NORTHERN JASPER” in handling the serious collision between the Vessel and M/V “SAFMARINE MERU” off Zhoushan in 2016, including pollution claims brought by SPRO companies and a series of cargo claims brought by Chinese underwriters.
7. Acted for the P&I Club and owners of M/V “MAERSK ENSHI” in handling disputes with the owners of a fishing vessel, the family members of the missing crew, a local oil-spill response company and a local fishery mutual insurance association arising from the collision between the Vessel and F/V “ZHE LING YU 74036” off Taizhou in 2017, as well as the criminal investigation and proceedings against the Vessel’s deck officers.
8. Acted for the P&I Club and owners of M/T “ELLINGTON” in handling the collision between the Vessel and M/T “EL ZORRO” in Jiaxing in 2018, including a jurisdictional dispute concerning the inter-ship claims, pollution claims involving substantial amounts and limitation proceedings.
9. Acted for the P&I Club, hull underwriters and owners of VLCC “LANDBRIDGE PROSPERITY” in handling the Vessel’s collision and contact accidents involving other vessels and the wharves of two shipyards in Zhoushan in 2019, as well as the various claims arising therefrom.
10. Acted for the P&I Club and owners of M/V “MORGANA” in handling a cargo pollution incident in Zhoushan in 2020.
11. Acted for the owners of M/V “SEA JUSTICE” in handling the collision between the Vessel and M/T “A SYMPHONY” in Qingdao in 2021, including potential criminal charges, pollution claims, additional administrative penalties involving substantial amounts and legal proceedings outside China.
12. Acted for the P&I Club and owners of M/T “VOYAGER I” in handling the Vessel’s contact accident with a terminal in Shanghai in 2021 and the legal proceedings arising therefrom.
13. Acted for the owners and P&I Club of M/T “CABO KAMUI” in a USD 1.86 million collision claim, in which a counterclaim of USD 1.4 million and a jurisdictional objection were filed.
14. Acted for the charterers of M/V “MINOAS” in a series of cargo damage claims involving ten sets of bills of lading and seven claims totalling approximately USD 2.4 million. After achieving complete success at first instance, with all claims dismissed, the cases were settled for USD 175,000, representing a reduction of approximately 93% from the total amount claimed.
